Ah… Depop: the only online marketplace where you can find a $5 thrift tee selling for $40. But with the recent rise in popularity of sustainable fashion and secondhand clothing, Depop has become all the rage and a valid place to find one-of-a-kind pieces for your wardrobe. As someone who considers herself a seasoned Depop user, allow me to share my wisdom with you as you begin your search for hidden treasures.
Have Something to Search For (or Someone)
Depop will work in your favor a whole lot better if you have an idea of what you want. Unfortunately, the way Depop is set up is really not casual-shopper-friendly. Sure, there’s an “Explore” tab with their cool curated picks of the day, but those items sell FAST. I have found that I get better results when I search for exactly what I’m looking for. For example, I’m having a moment right now with both corset tops and cow print, so inputting those key words gives me a ton to work with. Alternatively, if you are in more of a mood to browse, you can search your style icon, (like Rachel Green, Carrie Bradshaw), for pieces that resemble your style god.
Don’t Fall for Overpriced Clothing
Try to understand the value of items before buying. Many sellers will try to trick you into thinking a piece is “super rare” to explain away a high price tag, but remember that they most likely picked up the item from a thrift store for way cheaper. There are plenty of cute things that are priced reasonably, so if the cost looks suspicious, just move on!
Venture Outside Your Typical Sizing
Similar to regular thrift shopping, Depop has a lot of vintage pieces available, which means sizing could vary. So, don’t be strict with what sizes you consider. I once bought a pair of vintage jeans with a waist measurement supposedly much bigger than my own, and they fit amazingly well. Other times, a piece fitting a little over- or under-sized makes it look that much better on.
Check Reviews & Ask Questions Before Buying
Always, always, always check a seller’s reviews before you hit that “Buy” button. Most sellers are reputable, but sometimes they can be deceiving or slow with shipping. Spare yourself the headache and take those five extra seconds to do your homework. In addition, don’t be afraid to pester the seller with questions. Want to know measurements? Would you like more pictures? Don’t be afraid to reach out; you deserve transparency!
Hope you find some great deals and steals! Happy Depop shopping!
